S T O R I E S
FROM OUR TEAM
More Aware
I enjoy feeling like I am really doing something to help the ladies that need help. It has made me more aware of what people are going through.
Out of Darkness Family
My parents instilled in me and my sisters to see people as Jesus sees them, and to try and meet their needs when possible. Volunteering with Out of Darkness has helped me to not only be more bold in approaching definitely the women we get to serve, but also to ask strangers (servers, clerks, etc.) if I can pray for them.
The other thing it has done is created what we call our "Out of Darkness Family"; because we have all been volunteering for many years together, we have been through a lot in our personal lives, and we are there for one another. It has also impacted me in a very difficult way, in that we have experienced much loss with the women we've met for those who have "skipped out" or who have tragically passed away.
Princess Nights
I love the other volunteers (we get a lot of time to chat during rescues and Gwen is amazing for Princess nights), I like knowing I'm part of helping women find freedom, and like most ministry outreaches ...we go to serve and pour into others but end up being poured into ourselves! God is so good!!
A New Heart
I love being used by God to show love to these women who have faced so much darkness and pain. Volunteering in this ministry has changed me in profound ways. God has given me a new heart of compassion and love for others, and is removing my self righteous and judgmental attitudes.
I am coming to better know who God is through this work
The Journey
I enjoy being a small part of the journey women are taking when they leave the life and begin the healing journey towards freedom. My initial start with OOD lead to leading a motel outreach ministry in Gainesville for the past eight years with Free Chapel, and also have seen people come through the Gainesville team to serve OOD directly! It's been incredible to see God's hand move through it all.
Partnering with God
Seeing the compassion and kindness of staff and other volunteers; seeing the impact on lives; feeling like I'm partnering with God's care and justice
Martha, Once Again!
I love the folks that volunteer, and am inspired by Martha!
(Martha asked Dan to remove this but he did not comply)
Changed My Heart
It had changed my heart towards men specially. I was able to see what Ephesians 6:12 meant. And it taught me how to be compassion towards the men who come to strip clubs and those who are participating in this industry.
God also opened my eyes to see the heart of the women in the strip club and to pray that they will able to comprehend how deep, how wide, how long and how God's love towards them.
Sharing My Story
I was in darkness for many years and I love sharing my story with women who are struggling with addictions of any kind.
Why I Got Involved
A 13 yr. old girl ran away from a home for girls in VA for which I was a speaker.
When she was found she had been trafficked, and a beautiful, sweet girl was in darkness.
I have now been involved with OOD for over 5 years.
Hotline Memory
One evening, we had a man who was being trafficked in Atlanta call our hotline.
He opened the call by saying "I hear you are a group who would love even someone like me!". We were able to get him to a safe place that night.
Since 2014!
I have been a volunteer since we began in 2014. For 20 years prior, I had been driving past the strip club near me and praying for the women there.
I'd think, "If I could just go in there..." And now I get to! As soon as I heard about a group meeting in Middle GA to pray about the situation, I was all in!
Shoulder to Shoulder
My late wife, Billie heard about OOD from a friend in Atlanta. We attended training in Atlanta .. as we sat in the car after the Friday night session - we couldn't move.. for the longest time .. HOW COULD WE NOT get involved and help. Personally - I have always had a passion to help / make a difference in the lives of abused women - as in DOMESTIC abuse ... prior to attending the training - I had NO idea of what a Princess' life looked like .. having had my eyes opened by the training - YES, here is a way to make a difference in these precious soul's lives .. and to do it SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH MY WIFE... Wow! what a blessing from God. And, it has been a huge blessing
My OOD Journey
I answered 24-hr hotline calls, arranged for rescues, went on rescues, led Princess Nights excursions, and went to Dekalb Jail to meet with incarcerated young women.
I currently keep in touch with and provide support (with the help of my church) for one incarcerated woman whom I have been mentoring since 2015.
My OOD Experience
Helping my city and praying with others has helped my outlook on the city and how we can help more.
The Women We Serve
The strength of the women we serve never ceases to amaze and inspire me.
A Safe Place
Just knowing she is in a safe place and getting help. It's a blessing to get to serve!!!!!
